  11.         An essential part of good vehicle management is maintenance 
  12.         records.  TLC will help you keep track of your expenses and 
  13.         maintenance schedules.  If you have just received your copy of 
  14.         TLC, this text file will tell you what the program will do and 
  15.         how you set it up on your computer and use it.
  16.  
  17.         You should find the following files on your TLC diskette:

  19.              AUTOEXEC.BAT    To auto start your floppy TLC program
  20.              CONFIG.SYS      Needed information for your system
  21.              DEMO <DIR>      A subdirectory of sample files
  22.              DINSTALL.BAT    To install TLC on hard drive C:
  23.              DRIVE.DBF       To store default drive and CRT data
  24.              FINSTALL.BAT    To install a floppy system 
  25.              FILES <DIR>     A subdirectory of blank files
  26.              HISTORY.TLC     Changes in TLC versions
  27.              README.TXT      How to get rolling
  28.              TLC.BAT         To start TLC on a hard disc system
  29.              TRUCKS.EXE      The TLC program
  30.              UPDATING.TXT    Update older TLC files
  31.              USETLC.TXT      The instruction text for the program

  33.         A second diskette is furnished with TLC TRUCK which contains
  34.         a few records of vehicle descriptions, repairs and fuel entries.
  35.  
  36.         TLC uses six data files and nine indexes to quickly locate
  37.         your records.

  52.         MAKING A PRINTED COPY OF THESE INSTRUCTIONS
  53.  
  54.         You can print a copy of these instructions.  The name of this 
  55.         file is USETLC.TXT.  It is a plain ASCII file and can be viewed 
  56.         on your CRT screen with the TYPE command or printed with the 
  57.         PRINT command.  With this file in your drive A: and your printer 
  58.         ready, issue the command "PRINT A:USETLC.TXT" and press <ENTER>.  
  59.         Direct the output to the printer (usually with an <ENTER> ).

  63.                   HOW TO USE THE TLC TRUCK DATA SYSTEM
  64.  
  65.         TLC is an easy to use, menu driven program built around dBASE-
  66.         like routines that were compiled with the CLIPPER compiler.  
  67.         System requirements for a minimum configuration are: 
  68.  
  69.              An IBM type PC, XT or compatible with 512K and one floppy 
  70.                diskette drive. 
  71.             
  72.              The TLC program TRUCKS.EXE
  73.  
  74.              The six data files with the .DBF extension and nine index 
  75.                files with the .NDX extension.
  76.  
  77.              An EPSON compatible printer to do the printed reports.  A 
  78.                wide carriage printer or one that will print condensed
  79.                print will be needed for the wider reports.
  80.  
  81.         For maximum storage, features and speed of operation, a 
  82.         recommended system will include: 
  83.            
  84.              640K of memory
  85.          
  86.              A CGA type color monitor (TLC displays are white leters on 
  87.                a blue background with entry items highlighted in yellow.)
  88.                Monochrome settings are also selectable.
  89.  
  90.              A hard disk (drive C:) or mass storage device such as a 
  91.                Kodak or Bernoulli cartridge storage drive (as drive D:).
  92.  
  93.         USING THE DEMONSTRATION FILES
  94.  
  95.         The TLC distribution diskettes include a diskette of DEMO files.
  96.         If you are anxious to see the operation of the program, 
  97.         place the TLC program diskette (use a BACKUP) drive A:.  Place the
  98.         DEMO diskette in drive B: and, at the A: prompt, enter the command
  99.         "TRUCKS" to start the program.  Specify "B" as the drive with your
  100.         records.  Then, use the demo files just as described for using the
  101.         floppy diskette system.

  103.              There are these vheicles in the file:
  104.  
  105.              146, 146R, 482, 482R, 865 and 865R
  106.  
  107.         From the menu, locate them by number.  Make a note of the names, 
  108.         tag number, and VIN's for them.  Then search for a driver's 
  109.         name, tag number, etc.  Look at some of the repair entries.  
  110.         Print some reports.
  111.  
  112.         When you are through looking, just remove the DEMO diskette 
  113.         and go through the install routine to set up your working 
  114.         system.

  118.         SETTING UP YOUR FLOPPY DISKETTE SYSTEM
  119.  
  120.         The size of your stored records is limited by the storage device 
  121.         where the records are stored.  You can get about 1500 records on 
  122.         a single floppy diskette.  If you are limited to a floppy system 
  123.         and you have a good many vehicles, you may want to keep your 
  124.         records for each year or each division on separate diskettes. 
  125.  
  126.         First, using the DOS command DISKCOPY, make a backup copy of 
  127.         the TLC diskette that was supplied to you.  Put the original 
  128.         away in a safe place and set up your system from the backup. 
  129.  
  130.         Using your regular DOS commands, format a new system diskette
  131.         for your program.   Place a new diskette in drive B: and issue 
  132.         the command:
  133.         
  134.                   "FORMAT B:/S"
  135.         
  136.         Again, using the DOS commands, FORMAT a new diskette that will 
  137.         contain your records.  Although TLC can be operated from a 
  138.         single floppy system, let's assume that you have two floppy 
  139.         drives, drive A: and B:.  Place your TLC backup in drive A: and 
  140.         the newly formatted records diskette in drive B: and, from the A:_ 
  141.         prompt, issue the following command:
  142.  
  143.              "FINSTALL"    (Don't type the quotes and, following the
  144.                             command, press the <ENTER> or <RETURN> key.)
  145.  
  146.         Five .DBF files and nine .NDX indixes will be copied to the B: 
  147.         diskette.  This will be your record diskette. 
  148.  
  149.         When the diskette is completed, follow the on-screen 
  150.         instructions with your TLC backup still in drive A: and the new 
  151.         SYSTEM diskette in drive B:, the files:
  152.         
  153.                 AUTOEXEC.BAT    CONFIG.SYS       DRIVE.DBF 
  154.                 and TRUCKS.EXE   will be copied.
  155.  
  156.                 This will be your program diskette.
  157.  
  158.         NOTE:  If you have other things in your CONFIG.SYS or your 
  159.         AUTOEXEC.BAT Files (such as clock routines, for example) you may 
  160.         want to add them.  If you do not understand this, seek the 
  161.         assistance of your computer dealer or someone familiar with your 
  162.         computer.

  164.         SETTING UP YOUR SYSTEM ON A HARD DISK SYSTEM
  165.  
  166.         Both your TLC program and records can be stored on your hard 
  167.         disk.  Operation is MUCH faster and the size of your stored 
  168.         records is limited only by the space available on your hard 
  169.         disk.
